Michelle Mativi

Michelle Mativi is a glass artist and designer based in Cambridge. She has been working with glass for over 10 years, having originally studied architectural glass at the renowned University of Wales, Trinity Saint David’s in Swansea.  Michelle's work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. In 2015, she won the George and Evelyn Gee Prize for craftsmanship, as well as the prestigious Stevens Architectural Glass Competition awarded by The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Glass Painters.

Michelle uses many different types of glass, including: float glass, window glass and hand-blown antique glass, layering material to add depth and texture. Her work combines both traditional and contemporary techniques, ranging from kiln forming, fusing, leading, and glass painting. Michelle’s experimental paint application techniques help to create a sense of movement, freedom and emotion.

She admires other artists that push the boundaries but still respect the qualities and beauty of glass, especially John Piper’s collaboration with Patrick Reyntiens. Reyntiens’s masterful skill translating designs to glass without losing the life and passion of the original work is a source of  inspriration. As a tutor, Michelle encourages experimentation and above all, having fun during her classes and workshops.
